Bali Underwater Filming
Indonesia sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle — the global epicenter of marine biodiversity — making Bali and its surrounding waters among the world's premier underwater filming destinations. From the famous USAT Liberty shipwreck in Tulamben to the manta ray cleaning stations of Nusa Penida, from pristine coral gardens teeming with tropical fish to dramatic underwater cave systems and volcanic seafloor vents, Bali offers underwater cinematographers an extraordinary range of marine environments within easy reach of land-based production infrastructure.
Premier Underwater Filming Sites
Tulamben — USAT Liberty Shipwreck: a WWII US Army transport ship resting at 5-30 meters depth, encrusted with coral and home to extraordinary marine life. The wreck is accessible directly from shore, eliminating the need for boat logistics. Visibility reaches 25+ meters in optimal conditions. Nusa Penida: famous for encounters with oceanic manta rays (3-5 meter wingspan) at Manta Point and the bizarre ocean sunfish (Mola Mola) that visit from July-November. Strong currents create challenging but rewarding filming conditions. Amed: pristine coral walls dropping from shallow reefs to deep blue water, with excellent macro life for detailed wildlife sequences. Menjangan Island (West Bali): crystal-clear water with visibility exceeding 40 meters, dramatic underwater cliff walls, and protected marine reserve status ensuring pristine reef conditions.
Wreck Diving
USAT Liberty (Tulamben) — shore-accessible WWII wreck at 5-30m. Coral-encrusted, incredible marine life, 25m+ visibility.
Megafauna
Nusa Penida — manta rays, Mola Mola, reef sharks. Open ocean encounters for wildlife documentary content.
Coral Reefs
Amed, Menjangan, Padang Bai — pristine reef systems, 30-40m visibility. Macro and wide-angle opportunities.
Underwater Camera Equipment
Our underwater camera department stocks professional cinema housings for the cameras your production demands. We carry Nauticam housings for RED Komodo, ARRI Alexa Mini, and Sony FX6 systems, along with dome ports for wide-angle work, macro ports for detailed marine life cinematography, and flat ports for wreck photography. Lighting packages include Keldan Video 8X underwater LED lights (15,000 lumens each), Backscatter Mini Flash strobes for still photography, and continuous LED panels for interview and close-up work. Focus and exposure controls are fully accessible through the housings, and we provide underwater monitors for directors watching from the surface via hardwired video feed.
Safety & Dive Operations
Underwater filming operations follow strict safety protocols developed over our 14 years of marine production experience. Every underwater shoot includes a certified dive master, surface safety officer, backup breathing equipment, first aid including oxygen, and communication with the nearest decompression chamber (Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar). Our underwater camera operators are certified to advanced levels (PADI Divemaster minimum) and trained in underwater emergency procedures. Dive profiles are planned conservatively with safety stops, and no-decompression limits are strictly observed. For deep shoots (below 30 meters), we use enriched air (Nitrox) to extend bottom times safely. Marine life encounters are conducted following ethical wildlife interaction guidelines — we never chase, touch, or bait marine animals.
Best Seasons for Underwater Filming
Bali's underwater conditions vary seasonally and by location. Tulamben and Amed: best October-April with visibility reaching 30+ meters and calm seas. Nusa Penida manta rays: present year-round but most reliable July-November (also Mola Mola season). Menjangan Island: best April-November with visibility consistently exceeding 30 meters. Water temperatures range from 24-29°C depending on location and season — Nusa Penida can drop to 20°C in upwelling areas during Mola Mola season. Our dive coordinators plan shooting schedules around optimal conditions for each specific marine environment, maximizing your underwater production days.

Frequently Asked Questions
What cameras can you use underwater?
We carry Nauticam housings for RED Komodo, ARRI Alexa Mini, and Sony FX6. Complete underwater lighting and monitoring systems are included. Surface directors can watch live underwater footage via hardwired video feed.
Do I need diving experience to direct underwater?
No. We set up surface monitoring via live video feed so directors can watch and communicate with the underwater camera team in real-time. For directors who want to be underwater, we provide dive training and guided immersion experiences.
Can you film manta rays and Mola Mola?
Yes. Nusa Penida is one of the world's best locations for manta ray encounters (year-round) and Mola Mola sightings (July-November). We work with experienced local dive operators who know the best encounter points and conditions.
